How do I build a terrific salesforce on a shoestring budget?
Ringading asked:
I have a start-up so money is tight.
We’re selling bags, wallets, pillows, curtains, that sort of thing. I just don’t want someone with 5 yrs exp in one concentrated area switching over to this trying to sell my wares with no idea how to do so. That would not be worth my precious time & money.

Any true sales professional will want a commission based system. No way I am going to create 1mil in revenue and you pay me $25 an hour.

I agree with the guy above. You gotta pay your sales people well, or they will be someone else’s sales people very soon.
Start with some good sales training … I recommend the Sandler system.
Commission is easy. Try offering benefits. If health care insurance is too expensive. Set up a Profit Sharing Plan for key employees and sales members. In some plans you can discriminate.
Weekly catered lunches, something small, it will go along way with the employees.
You build it progressively. You can use someones “system” but systems do not apply to every industry. If you told us what it is you are selling maybe we could help you out more. Since you are just a start-up, you are not going to hire a terrific salesforce, instead you will develop a terrific salesforce one by one.
